My first BMO Vancouver Half Marathon: 3:01:00. I had no pacing plan. I just ran until I could not run any more.
My second BMO Vancouver Half Marathon: 2:06:00. I ran the race exactly as planned. Controlled effort on the hills. Disciplined pacing in the early kilometers. Fuel taken on schedule.
Here is the pacing strategy that made the difference.
The Half Marathon Challenge
At 21.1 km, the half marathon sits in an unusual place:
Too long to run on adrenaline alone
Too short to recover from an early mistake
Fast enough to hurt from start to finish
That makes pacing crucial. Get it wrong and you will suffer, as I did the first time. Get it right and you will fly.
Pacing Strategies
1. Even Splits (What I Did)
Run every kilometer at the same pace:

It is the most efficient way for your body to work
It is predictable and easy to control
Consistency builds confidence

The first 5K should feel almost too easy
I aimed for 6:00/km. The first few kilometers felt slow. But I trusted the plan.
2. Slight Negative Split
Run the second half 30-60 seconds faster:

First half: 10-15 seconds/km slower than goal pace
Km 12-16: settle into goal pace
Last 5K: give it everything
3. Controlled Positive Split
Plan to slow down slightly in the second half:
When it works:
Hot weather
Hilly courses
When you are chasing a very ambitious personal best
The First Kilometer Trap
Km 1 always feels easy. The adrenaline is high, the crowd is cheering, and your legs are fresh.
The problem: starting too fast leads to a painful second half.
The solution:
Run km 1 10-15 seconds slower than goal pace
Let faster runners go past (you will catch them later)
Hold yourself back on purpose
I let people pass me at the start. I caught most of them by km 15.
The Middle Kilometers (10-16)
This is the empty middle part of the half marathon:
The excitement has gone
The finish is still a long way off
Your pace can slip without you noticing
How to stay on pace:
Break it into 2-3 km pieces
Focus on your form and your breathing
Find a pacer or a group running your speed
Use buildings or corners as small targets
The Final 5K
Km 17-21 are where races are won or lost:
Reach for your mental reserves
Repeat a short phrase ("strong and steady", "I trained for this")
Catch the runners ahead of you
Shorten your stride if you are struggling
This is what you trained for. The discomfort will not last.
Race-Day Execution Checklist
Before the Race:

Slow your goal pace by 1-2% for every 10°C above 15°C
